Outcome of Febrile Neutropenia in Children with Cancer: Experience from a Tertiary Health Care Center

Background: Febrile neutropenia (FN) is a serious event in children with cancer; associated various complications and mentionable adverse outcome.Objective: To identify the outcome of febrile cancer.Materials methods: This prospective observational study was conducted from October 2017 to November 2018 Department Pediatric Hematology Oncology, BSMMU. Children (age<18years) malignancy who were admitted or patients had developed onward enrolled this study. Finally, each episode FN analyzed.Results: Total 61 68 neutropenic episodes studied. Male 62.29% female 37.70% mean age 7 years. Majority ALL (50.8%) followed by AML (29.5%), NHL (11.4 %) solid tumor (8.1%). Bacterial infection confirmed culture 14.7% episodes, 11.7% positive blood culture. Most isolated organisms gram-negative (90%). Cough (39.7%), bleeding (19%) diarrhea (17.64%) common clinical manifestations those episodes. The duration 9 days, 55.88% prolonged neutropenia. Profound recorded 47 % significantly outcome. Age ≥10 years also treatment success rate achieved in76.4 A composite observed 23.52% episodes; mortality 11.76%.Conclusion: complication hematological malignancy. Although 76.4% been treated successfully, higher 11.76%. significant risk factors for dreadful KYAMC Journal Vol. 14, No. 01, April 2023: 07-10
